dCrypt is a program designed to extract the passwords from files encrypted by the program nCrypt.
nCrypt is a rather insecure program when it comes to protecting information, as it stores an encrypted version of the password-key in the encrypted file itself. That would be OK, but it uses a very insecure manner of encrypting this password-key.
Therefore, what dCrypt does is to decrypt the password-key of a particular file, and displays it in a window. It does not decrypt the file itself, as you can use nCrypt to do that when you have the password!

Launch dCrypt.
Depending on whether you wanna open an encrypted file or a self-extracting file, select the proper command from the File menu.
The command "Crack Encrypted File..." allows you to crack files that are not self-extracting. They do, however, need to have the Finder TYPE "ncry". So if you have a file that you know is encrypted with nCrypt but dCrypt refuses to display it in the open-window, make sure that the file is of TYPE "ncry".
The command "Crack Self-Extr. File..." cracks encrypted files that were saved as self-extracting files with nCrypt. These need to be applications (APPL) for dCrypt to be able to recognize them.
A window should then appear with the correct password for the file in it.
If you want to continue to crack other nCrypt files, just keep on selecting the proper commands from under the File menu.
(Unlike all my earlier programs, dCrypt is rather stabile when it comes to handling windows. The "Close" command is now actually usable from under the File menu.)
--==< Error Messages >==--
I've put in a great deal of effort into making dCrypt as stabile as possible! If you don't have any physical problems on your hard drive, the only error you should encounter is the one saying "An error occurred while opening the resource fork. Make sure this is an nCrypt self expanding file!" If you get this message it probably means that the file you selected is not a nCrypt self-extracting application. If you wanna double check whether the file is "crackable" by dCrypt, open it with ResEdit and make sure that it has an "SDFx" resource.
If you get an error message informing you about a disk error, then there's something wrong on your hard drive (or the file is damaged). As a side-note, I haven't been able to check how dCrypt works on HDF+ hard drives, so I'd love to have some feedback on that!
If you get a bunch of gibberish as a password then something obviously went wrong. I actually don't know which version of nCrypt that dCrypt 1.0 can crack. But I read something about that there's a new nCrypt that uses public key encryption. Naturally, towards that dCrypt is useless.
Also you might get gibberish if the encrypted file is damaged. I haven't experimented with the effects of a damaged encrypted file, so lemme know if you encounter something like that.

dCrypt 1.0 is a freeware. This means that you don't have to pay for using it, and you may distribute it freely to whomever you want, but only under these conditions:
1.When distributing dCrypt 1.0 you will include this "Read Me!" file as well!
2.You will not change anything in the application dCrypt 1.0 nor the "Read Me" file, without my permission. (If you want to change it around I probably won't refuse your request, it's just that I'd like to have a copy of the new program)
3.You will not blame me for any damage that is done to your (or anybody else's) computer because of dCrypt 1.0 .

I take NO responsibility to whatever happens to anybody's computer because of the use of dCrypt 1.0 or any related use. I have tested dCrypt 1.0 extensively not only in it's final state of existence, but also as I was developing it. I have tested dCrypt 1.0 on a PowerBook running under OS 8.0, as well as on a Performa 400 running under System 7.1 without any problems. The coding (as I released this software originally) did NOT contain any "destructive" traps or purposes (nor was it virus infected to the best of my knowledge!). So if anything goes wrong because of dCrypt 1.0 I WILL NOT take responsibility for it! If you use dCrypt 1.0 it's under YOUR OWN responsibility!
